Haas CNC and Jeremy Mayfield part ways

Haas CNC Racing officials announced today that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team and driver Jeremy Mayfield have mutually agreed to part ways.

"Jeremy's proven resume behind the wheel of a Cup car was a real benefit to our team," Haas General Manager Joe Custer said. "He stepped into the seat and did everything we asked him to and more.

"Ultimately, we were unable to provide him with the right balance, handling and speed he needed to be successful. We wish Jeremy nothing but the best for his future."

Mayfield joined the team for four races last year after competing with Bill Davis Racing for part of 2007. He drove for Evernham Motorsports from 2002 until late in 2006, when he parted company with the team and underwent a legal dispute over having his contract bought out. Mayfield, who has five career Cup wins, has a top series points finish of seventh, which came in 1998 while driving for Penske Racing.

The team is exploring several replacement options and has entered Johnny Sauter, who drove for Haas last season, this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. The No. 70 team is outside the top 35 in owners points, and Sauter must, therefore, make the field for Saturday night's Subway Fresh Fit 500 on speed.
