Dynamic 3D modelling software tools allows a user to freely reposition geometry anywhere within the 3D environment to form the basis for the first solid models

Transforming 2D design information into 3D conceptual data is a problem, said Schott Systeme. With the re-use of existing 2D/3D data and CAD interoperability strongly in mind however, Schott Systeme has avoided the common 'parametric' approach and uses 'Dynamic' modelling tools for a quicker approach to 3D design.

The process starts with the import of designs through such diverse methods as DXF, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw and even vectorised bitmaps.

The user is then able to 'brainstorm' and freely reposition the geometry anywhere within the 3D environment to form the basis for the first solid models.

As there is no need to constrain each sketch and feature within each model, entire 3D designs are constructed considerably quickly and with much more ease than when using a parametric approach, said Schott to manufacturingtalk.

The company said that its more simple approach to modelling also extends to entire assemblies.

Users don't have to define long lists of assembly constraints.

Instead they can quickly select individual parts or assemblies to move.

Additional 2D data formats can be converted into 3D and freely mixed with the models, including bitmaps and windows cliparts (ideal for architectural designs).

* Non-history based modelling - the key to the process is based on the ability to work directly on the 3D model's geometry, as opposed to having to define each feature within a history based feature tree.

Also by working in a single drawing environment, in contrast to the multiple file formats offered by most parametric modellers, the user far more flexible in their approach to creating and working with mixed 2D geometry, 3D parts and assemblies, graphics and bitmaps.

Being able to directly edit a part without a construction history allows the user to modify a model without having any prior knowledge of the designs original construction.

So it is an ideal tool for anyone involved in the downstream design process.
