All-electric punch press can laser-cut too

Further versatility in the production of sheet metal components results from the addition of a laser cutting facility to an already versatile all-electric CNC punch press.

Further versatility in the production of sheet metal components results from the addition of a laser cutting facility to the versatile Finn-Power E all-electric punch press, available in the UK through sole agent, Press and Shear Machinery, Tamworth The LPE 5 builds on the advantages offered by the basic E-series concept; already it is one of the only punching machines to provide a multi-stage bending facility as well as punching, forming, up-forming and tapping

Moreover the absence of hydraulics makes for very fast, accurate operation, ideally suiting the machine to production of complex, high precision components.

In addition operating costs are low thanks to ingenious application of regenerative braking technology.

The machine is a 200kN punch press utilising Finn-Power's traditional, highly robust 'O' frame.

A 20-station turret is fitted that can be specified with any number of rotary index stations according to customer requirements.

Sheet capacity is up to 2530mm by 1270mm.

The servo electric ram operates by driving a roller across the surface of a cam form at the top of the ram.

By programming the roll's linear position, ram depression can be very tightly controlled.

This has allowed development of an ingenious 'learning' facility for automatic setting of tool length.

When a new or re-sharpened tool is placed in the machine, its length is initially set to zero.

When the tool is first used, it automatically stops on sheet contact and its length is accurately recorded.

Finn-Power's so-called Intelligent Stroke Control then takes over control of the tool stroke setting according to the material being processed.

On the Finn-Power LPE 5, the punching facility is supplemented by either a Triagon carbon-dioxide laser or a Rofin Sinar Slab laser.

Triagon lasers are available with resonator powers up to 3.5kW, allowing processing of up to 8mm thick stainless steel or 6 mm thick aluminium.

Quick change optics allow the laser process to be optimised for different materials while assist gas is available for increasing processing speed or clean-edge cutting of stainless steel.

A height sensing system is used to maintain constant distance between the nozzle and the workpiece.

The Finn-Power LPE5 thus provides a flexible material processing system in a single unit.

Components with significant levels of complexity, including forms with height up to 16 mm, can be completed on the machine in a single set-up.

To exploit this capability to the full, Finn-Power NC Express programming software has been developed for the machine.

This provides a range of automated programming features in a user friendly format to maximise machine operating time and process efficiency.

Various levels of work handling automation are available.

Two trap-door style off-load systems are integrated as standard and can be used with optional off-load conveyor systems, as can the SUB 8 sorting system which has eight bins.

The Finn-Power LSR 2500 stacking robot which loads, unloads and sorts finished components can also be supplied.
