On-Machine Verification to improve quality of parts

By combining this equipment with OMV, verification can be carried out at little extra cost.
DELCAM has released a free guide to using the On-Machine Verification (OMV) feature of its PowerINSPECT software.
The guide comes in DVD format, and covers the benefits of using OMV and the types of application where the approach is most advantageous.
OMV allows initial checking of machined parts to be carried out in situ on any CNC machine tool. This is an alternative to the traditional method where the parts are transferred to coordinate measuring tools for inspection.
It makes use of the probing capabilities intrinsic to many modern machine tools. Machine tools without these features can also be retrofitted. By combining this equipment with OMV, verification can be carried out at little extra cost.
According to Delcam, this approach is advantageous because mistakes discovered can be quickly corrected on the machine tool. Companies

which do not have existing inspection capabilities also gain the quality-checking utility.
OMV can also enable components to be monitored more frequently during the manufacturing process. This is said to improve quality control by detecting errors earlier. The amount of damage caused by events like tool breakage can also be assessed accurately to determine if a part will need to be scrapped.
