SIEMENS PLM Software has released a new version of its free 2D

drafting software.
The Solid Edge 2D Drafting freeware aims to ease the 2D-to-3D transition for its customers. The company says 180,000 users have downloaded the software, of which 21% are planning to upgrade to 3D.
Companies have been using the 2D Drafting software to design various parts and products, allowing a smooth pathway into 3D by reducing the learning curve and allowing designs to be used across the transition.
The software is a standalone 2D CAD component of the Velocity Series portfolio. It is said to be capable of creating 2D documentation such as drawing layout, diagramming, annotation and dimensioning controls. These automatically comply with drafting standards.
The software is also fully compatible with Solid Edge. The new version has a user interface which utilises the look and feel of the Microsoft Office 2007 suite of products.
