What to see at Southern Manufacturing
The Southern Manufacturing show (February 11th-12th 2009, FIVE, Farnborough) offers a wealth of precision engineering, electrical and electronic subcontract manufacturing services. Engineering Capacity gives a pre-Christmas taste of what visitors expect to see from Cabletree, Inro, ALR, Perfect Bore, Brighton Sheet Metal and Stevens Rowsell.
Cabletree (Mfg) UK - Stand C72.
Cabletree is Taiwanese owned and managed with its own ISO accredited factory based in Dongguan southern China. Cabletree traditionally manufactured cable assemblies and wire hanesses, including overmoulding, but in 2006 extended its service to cover tooling, moulds, machined / turned / moulded parts, and has recently redesigned its website to detail its comprehensive service and capabilities.

Inro - Stand J42
The use of the cutting edge manufacturing technology enables Inro to offer a wide range of standard or modified fasteners. Production facilities include up to 10 axis CNC single spindle lathes that can produce the most complex fasteners.
Programs for standard parts can be modified to produce specials at very competitive prices. In the catalogue, there are 150 different fastener types - all available in different sizes. Over 1.5 million components are held in stock for rapid off the shelf delivery.
There is a heavy investment programme to maintain its levels of flexibility combined with keen prices. Over the last three years over £3 million has been invested in new equipment. The investment doesn’t stop at machines; it also embraces the latest DataTrack computer system, which looks after production control, materials, purchasing and quantity control.

In recent years it has expanded its service by introducing a ‘Total Manufacture’ option; increasing it’s manufacturing footprint from 6,000 to 15,000 sq foot. Although, it believes its main strength and the maximum value remains in providing its customers with 1st stage machine operations and bore production.
After an investment of £750,000 in deep hole drilling capability, it can handle components weighing up to 5 tonne with external diameters from 2 to 900 mm requiring up to 150 mm diameter holes and 3 m long.
Bores are produced with sub-micron accuracy and high standards of surface finish. The company has installed all the latest metrology equipment to ensure all tolerances can be monitored and maintained.

Brighton Sheet Metal – Stand G48
What is thought to be the first machine of its type to be installed in the UK can be found in the factory of Brighton Sheet Metal. It is a piecing system with automated tool change and load/unload. Even tapping and small bracket bending are possible.
With 220-tool capacity, many different parts can be manufactured without resetting. This reflected in enhanced productivity. Sheets 2.5 by 1.5 m can be handled.
Other high tech investments include a robotic forming cell, which transforms the forming operation. Offering high precision allied with exceptional speed, the cell can be networked to Windows 3D remote control. Capable of "lights out" running, it dramatically improves both quality and productivity
The long-term strategy of the company is to provide a single source capability for major projects. That’s why it also undertakes finishing processes, silk screen printing and mechanical & electronic assembly. As well as a major investment in capital equipment, this has demanded a massive investment in skill training to create multi-skilled teams.

Stevens Rowsell – Stand E43
At last year’s show, Stevens Rowsell unveiled a major investment in sheet metal manufacturing. This was one of the most sophisticated automated laser cutting systems ever seen in the UK. It was built around a flat-bed 4kW laser that can cut plate up to 25mm thick. However, it was the level of automated sheet handling that made this installation outstanding.
It comprises twin towers for sheet storage. Depending on work pattern, the machine can run for several days without operator intervention. With the system, part-used sheets can be put back in the racks for future used. The system “remembers what is stored where and what areas of each sheet have been used.
The control software keeps track of everything including daily production schedules and the material requirements; any material shortages are highlighted. Work destined for different customers can be nested on the same sheet. This achieves two desirable objectives – maximum flexibility for customers and the wider mix of parts on the one sheet promotes better material utilisation.
For this year investment has continued with the emphasis switching to quality control. An “Investment in Quality” initiative has embraced both new people and capital equipment. The latter has included a Faro inspection arm that has replaced a host of manual equipment.
