Claro airs its green credentials
Yorkshire-based Claro Precision Engineering Ltd will significantly reduce its carbon footprint following the installation of an Atlas Copco variable speed air compressor.
The purchase of the new compressed air system adds to Claro’s portfolio of specialist equipment and has been funded with the support of a grant from the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) and an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust.
The compressed air from the system will be used on Claro's CNC milling and turning machines to remove swarf and power pneumatically moving tools.
Rather than having a fixed output, the speed varies with demand, which means that the system works much more efficiently and saves energy. In the first year of operation this will equate to 85,000 kWh of electricity and 46,000kg of CO2.
With the new system working right across the manufacturing facility, the company says the savings contribute to Claro’s competitiveness in the international market whilst making a positive contribution to the environment. In addition, the heat generated by the compressor has been ducted to the heating of the factory, providing extra energy efficiencies.
Martin Doxey, managing director at Claro said: "A key part of Claro Precision’s mission is to minimise our impact on the environment. After examining our manufacturing processes and procedures last year, we concluded that we could save money and substantially reduce our carbon footprint by installing a state-of-the-art compressed air facility.
"The combination of a MAS grant and interest free loan from the Carbon Trust meant that the investment gave us a positive cash flow – we were never out of pocket. Now that we are in recession, the ongoing cost savings are helping us to compete in a very tight market."
Established in 1978, Claro Precision Engineering Ltd, based at Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, specialises in precision machining - CNC Milling and CNC Turning - and machined parts. The company has won numerous awards for its subcontract machining expertise and the supply of precision machined parts and also holds both AS9100 Aerospace accreditation and ISO 9001:2000.
