A pair of twin wire oil (TWO) electrical discharge machining (EDM) systems have been announced by a Swiss CNC machining firm.


GF AgieCharmilles stated the new systems would be able to mitigate the effects of corrosion on workpieces, in effect improving cycle times.

The organisation is aiming to target this issue as steel and carbide workpieces are regularly affected by corrosion and surface degradation when water is used as a dielectric, which can affect precision engineering companies producing complex parts and tools.

Such items may include sintering dies and micro-connectors, AgieCharmilles added.

Martin Spencer, the EDM product manager at AgieCharmilles, explained: "The FI 2050 TWO machines address the problems associated with the corrosive effects of water on parts - and increased part cycle times, usually a by-product of using oil as a dielectric, have been negated due to the machines' twin-wire technology."

Earlier this month, the firm released a new high-performance wire EDM system for super-precision applications and micro-projects: the CUT 1000.
