Siemens - Preparing CNC for the Future

Like any other company, Siemens has to find a way to leverage the constellation of OEMs/machine builders, end users, and automation suppliers for their own benefit.  Easier said than done, since within this triangle, each party has different objectives.  Since machine builders are reluctant to differentiate themselves by advanced automation equipment, they often bypass this dilemma with brand labeling (e.g. by redesigning the HMI software's layout), and the end-user business is relatively small (only about 11% for PLCs), a collaborative approach with all three parties is crucial for an automation supplier to drive innovation and to financially benefit from this.

Offered benefits could be energy efficient production – a topic that faces the problem of a prisoner dilemma – and, of course, the concept of an integrated production that links office software (design software like CAD and CAM; resource planning; XML-based office programs) with the factory floor (CNC).

The bottom line is that the complete lifecycle has to be covered.  For this approach, large automation suppliers are crucial, since they can drive this development more than anyone else.  At a press conference today, Siemens demonstrated how far they already are in integrating these applications, especially with Siemens PL.

Certainly many users are conservative in adapting this technology, so it is crucial to take an evolutionary approach rather than a revolutionary one.  In the case of CNC, this means that the functionality and Interface (HMI software, as well as Operator Terminal hardware) should be left unchanged, for now.

The collaborative approach that Siemens is using also enables them to solve the problem of increasing commoditization of their products by offering software.  In addition, Siemens also offers service for customers (machines builders, and end users), which is certainly an important step for the future, because even software will not be able to withstand the trend of commoditization.
