New machine gives W. Carrollton firm competitive edge

A new 5-axis vertical machining center has allowed Johnson Machining Services in West Carrollton to enter into the emerging green technology market.

JMS in April 2008 moved from Germantown to 4505 Infirmary Road. The company produces a wide range of high-precision production and tooling parts for commercial, military, aerospace, and the research and development industries.

JMS is using its new machining center to produce several drive-train components for an efficient municipal bus that uses what company President Tom Johnson describes as cutting-edge, “regenerative braking technology.”

“The new machine is capable of much more complex geometries than the 3-axis CNC machines commonly found in most contract machining businesses,” he said.

He said it has a built-in motion detector that prevents automatic operation if it’s moved.

“This is to prevent the machine from being sold or transferred to any number of rogue states where it could be used to produce high-tech weapons components,” Johnson said. “This is not a machine that anyone wants in the wrong hands.”

JMS employs six people and anticipates adding another two or three employees to help run the new 5-axis machine as the municipal bus project picks up in 2010.

JMS Vice President Robert Mason said the company also recently purchased a new coordinate measurement machine.
