A and M EDM has invested in a range of high-performance electrical discharge machining (EDM) units, including 18 models supplied by Sodi-Tech EDM.

The company said the EDM machines' ability to handle large components helps it secure contracts that many of its competitors cannot accommodate.

A recent example was the modification of a tool for an automotive door skin, which required two notches to be produced using wire EDM.

With a tool size of 2000 x 1600 x 500mm, no one else had machines large enough for the task.

The company's latest wire EDM addition is a Sodick AQ900L, which provides extra capacity for components measuring up to 1200 x 900 x 400mm.

The machine can produce +/- 30-deg tapers at 100mm height, and features LQ control technology so that solid models can be imported directly.

This maximises cutting efficiency while reducing work flow and programming errors.
