The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) will spend Rs 3 crore in two years on a cluster formed by 20 Ludhiana machine-tool units to enable them to compete in Indian and foreign markets.

With this, the cluster became the first in North India to be chosen for the project.

Under the project, UNIDO will provide all expertise to the units, including assistance of foreign experts and organising seminars and workshops. There is a condition too: the units will have boost export by 50 per cent, domestic sales by 20 per cent and increase use of computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines by 50 per cent to reduce dependence on manual jobs, Deepak Balani, UNIDO programme officer said.

The UNIDO would be conducting complete videography of the units to make record of the changes they gradually make, Balani added.
