Montreal flight-training giant CAE Inc. said Friday it has made a small but strategic acquisition that will enhance its position in the U.S. defence sector.

Subsidiary CAE USA has bought the Technology Assisted Learning (TAL) unit of RTI International Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

TAL designs and makes full-scale maintenance trainers for the U.S. army's ground vehicles and also virtual desktop trainers for a range of vehicles from tanks to artillery rocket carriers. It has 35 highly skilled staff.

CAE said the deal will allow it to offer TAL's present and future customers in the U.S. and abroad a wider range of services by adding its own simulation technologies. The services may soon extend to driver trainers and land combat vehicle simulators.
