Developments in CNC controls are comprehensive. One hand, some manufacturers introduce simpler controls for a minimum number of axles and cheap machines, others to build complex applications and provide more functionality. Dialogue control is popular, some brands who once programmed ISO, now offer software for dialogue.

The CNC control is a component of a metalworking machine where each operator, machine adjuster or programmer has to deal with daily. By highly automated, powerful CAM packages on the one hand but also demand for cheaper and simpler machinery on the other hand, there is a discord caused by the controls. Complex products, often worked five-axis, require a solid and precise control with smart software. But simpler machines just fine off with compact and simpler controls.

CNC controls provide the "intelligence" of a machine tool. Developments at the controls run in parallel with developments in electronics and software development. It is clear that most manufacturers respond to issues such as cost savings, simpler controls, new generations of operators, more intuitive, faster and easier programming, shortening of machining cycles, increasing product quality and a better integration with automation.
